If the groove is shallow/narrow but not to a great degree to allow slippage yet, the ligaments too long or weak or the patella malformed, the subluxation may not develop until later in some dogs after more wear and tear or an injury to any part of the knee mechanism. I understand not all dogs have it to the degree that it shows up in puppyhood - that their defects that can lead to it take some time to develop into LP. I know every single vet that examined Tibbe when I got him at 9 mos. of age - said he had no LP - a total of 5 in all - and yet when he had his scintigraphy this spring, the 2 vets that did a PE on him said he had a mild form of it bilaterally as of age 5.
