An xpen is really handy. If you are staying overnight in a hotel, pen the pups and search the floor carefully, including under the bed, for anything that may have been missed by the cleaning staff. Sometimes medications are dropped, earrings, or other dangerous items. Check for electrical cords and all of the things that are normally dog proofed at home.
