I agree that I would not pay for a purebred Yorkie without papers. Even if I did not intend to follow through on registering my pet, the papers are one more way of verifying a good breeder, imho. (although they are not a 100% guarantee of a well bred dog)
Also, you want a contract with the health guarantee up front. When we picked up Max, we sat down with the breeder to go over the papers, signed, and were handed copies. Then we paid the balance due.
The contract required proof of neuter before the AKC papers were mailed to us. Teddy came from the same breeder, and she had him neutered before we picked him up at 8 months of age. He came home with his AKC papers.
