Default False Pregnancy

I have a female that cannot be spay for health reasons. Every 6-7 months she goes into heat and about 8-9 weeks later she starts her false pregnancy behavior. It is at the same time she would deliver if she was pregnant.

She carries the same toy around with her everywhere she goes. Her favorite is a tiny pink pig. I don't know why. She is a bit needy but not excessively so. She does not have enlarged mammary glands but I have heard other people say that about their females. Her heat cycle is exactly like an intact female. It does last at least 30 days. Her activity level is less but not so much that I worry. She gets B12 shots every 6-8 weeks anyway so I don't worry. If she forgets which bed she last left her pink pig she lets me know that I have to find the pink pig. Until I find which bed she left it in and return it to her everything else must wait. About 3 weeks later the pig starts losing its importance. The 4th week I put the pink pig away until the next time. I was told the toy should be removed from her when she is not in a false pregnancy because she needs to believe it is her baby that she has not seen before.

There is a lot on the net about cannine false pregnancies. I only know one thing for certain. Like human pregnancies no two are exactly the same. It may be perfectly normal what you are experiencing. I would call my vet and go in only if he thought it was necessary. I say that because your female is having physiological changes and not just emotional, hormonal and mental changes.

Next time you are at the pet store see if there is a pink pig toy. It may come in handy! Good luck!

I started a post reply earlier and it disappeared. If you see a post of mine that is incomplete and does not make sense just ignore it!
