You're taking him to the vet -- that's what you should do, so you're already on track. He may have a bit of an infection. I would just find a different, better groomer.
As far as the hair growth goes -- DO NOT FEAR! It WILL grow back, and probably fairly quickly. My in law's have a Yorkiepoo and her hair grows super fast. They like to keep her super short because they don't want her to look like a poodle (she got a poodle coat after she lost the puppy coat), so they have to go frequently to have her fur cut.
