I always do this- I will usually take him to the pet store or for a short walk before and then we'll do something fun after too.
He doesn't want anyone ohhing and ahhing over him lol, that would make it worse. He prefers not to be doted on by strangers. He also won't typically take food in that state of mind. I even had a mcdonald's hamburger once and I put a tiny piece in my pocket in the wrapper and he wouldn't take it until we were alone and the appt was mostly over.
