If it is proven that Minnie is the offspring of two long-haired Yorkies, I see two possibilities for Minnie's short hair: (1) A spontaneous mutation from recessive long hair to dominant short hair that occurred in the sperm or egg cell that gave rise to Minnie (possible, but not likely), or (2) Minnie's parents are carriers for a recessive gene for short hair, and Minnie received a copy from each of her parents (more likely). There ARE recessive genes for short hair that have cropped up in Havanese dogs. See this link:
