I think dog food recommended feeding amounts are on the high side. Try cutting back the kibble too. Max gained weight and was headed toward being overweight, so I cut his lunch in half. We also went back to our morning walk routine, in addition to the evening outing. He has taken off 3 - 4 ounces.
