Though my Minnie was a female, she was about as far from the stereotypical girly small dog as one can get. E.g., she was always catching birds, fighting cats who roamed the neighborhood, liked running, digging in the yard, play-fighting (at 11-12 lbs too small to really wrestle though), and all other kinds of fun things. Just a really athletic dog; her vertical was more than 2 1/2 feet before she started getting old. I had the same kind of concerns and always had large dogs in the past (e.g., two Afghans, a Doberman, and a Mastiff), but frankly, my yorkie Minnie was a lot more fun and a lot funnier, and I think it's likely my next dog will be a yorkshire terrier also (Minnie just died 2 weeks ago). Just very affectionate and a lot of fun to spend time with.
