That pretty much happened to me with Blazer, too. He was curly and dark brown when I brought him in to the groomer and I brought home a much smaller looking little golden boy! He was shaved down much shorter than I had wanted and there was no actual style to his groom. I started grooming him myself after that. His hair came back and has changed colors many times still- he is now 10 1/2 months old and his first groom was when he was around 16 weeks, I think.
It is shocking to see your "baby" gone for good but luckily their hair grows quickly and you'll be loving his new look sooner rather than later. =)
