I could tell by his face and mannerisms that he was sad. So I tested him and said I was going to call and tell the people that we were keeping her and he said OK, so now I know he doesn't really want to get rid of her. So I told him that if we make a real effort to devote more attention to her and also get her some obedience training that she would probably be the best dog ever, because she is a huge cuddler and lover, but the decision is ultimately his since she's his baby. So we just may be keeping her. I'm torn because as of right now it'd be best to let her go but I don't want to give her up if my hubby isn't 100% sure. Once we let her go we can't get her back so I want him to be certain. We have until Thursday to decide for sure. I pray the right answer comes and we make the right decision for all. Thanks so much for the advice and comforting words |
I read your story and I got excited about this post. I really feel like you love the dog and can make things work. There was a rough patch with my 2 dogs for a while. It seems like potty training was going no where and they just tore stuff up all the time. But now my husband is loving on them and he even fell asleep with them last night(well, he was kind of drunk from the super bowl but I'll take it). But you learn how to adapt to them. They are like your family. Whenever my husband got frustrated I reminded him about how attached our son is to the dogs and how mad I used to get everytime my father would get rid of one of his hunting dogs that we always named and got attached to. These animals are a part of the family and it just wouldn't be the same without them.
I really think you could make things work. We set up a baby gate so the dogs only stay in the kitchen until they are completely potty trained. Is there anyway you can section off a part of the house that isn't carpeted for the dogs so you don't get as mad when they have an accident? My dogs only run the house only if someone is always with them. They also have a crate that we use at night, they're alot easier to train that way. I can also recommend reading some books or magazines to read. I figured out that when my dogs have accidents that it's really my fault most of the time. I hope this helps.
Oh, and about the boxer. I would ask ALOT of questions to the lady and make sure she's serious about breeding and not a byb. Make sure she knows not to go into the first heating cycle, etc. Make sure she is going to keep the dog inside as well. I would also recommend to charge her an adoption fee since you don't know her very well. People in general have attendancy to take better care of animals/things that they spent money on. Also, I would make up a contract that if something ever happens to her that she HAS to give her back to you instead of taking the dog to the shelter. Good luck!
