No one thinks badly of you for letting him have a little vacation at his Grandma's. I hope whatever it is that has scared him will ease during the time he is at your mom's. Maybe he needs a quiet atmosphere without other dogs and kids to feel safe and he'll return his old self.
I know if my Tinkerbell got out and was in someone else's house she didn't know, that alone would FREAK her out.
