Dexter shows clinical signs compatible with allergies, which could be caused by Adverse Food Reaction or Atopy (environmental allergies). I discussed the ways to rule-out these two different conditions with your husband and recommended a trial with anti-histamines for now. This class of drugs only leads to results in about 25% of canine patients, but is fairly inexpensive and easy to purchase OTC. If no improvement in Dexter's level of itchiness is noticed in 5-7 days on either medication, please contact our office to discuss diet trial and possibly a combination anti-histamine and steroid.
Please try ONE of these medications at-a-time for at least 5 days:
Benedryl 25mg - Give 1/2 tablet by mouth every 12 hours
Zyrtec 5 mg - give 1 tablet by mouth every 24 hours |
