Im curious why she wants a small dog. Do they have children? Planning to have children? If so the larger the better. I mean I have a 6 lber and hes perfect for me right now, but I have taught my kids to respect animals and they know to be very careful. Its been a long process and even still if the kids are playing too rough I pick Joey up and hold him or put him in another room so he wont get hurt.
A 10 lb dog is still a small dog. In the big scheme of things, you wont notice the difference between the sizes.
Actually, I saw a woman in the pet store with a 2 lb dog, and I would NEVER want that. Yeah, as a puppy I get it...but not as a full grown dog. They have to be sturdy, and I want a dog, not a hamster.
