Nancy I don't think you said beating, to me beating is so much worse than a smack or a a wack on the butt, and you are right and like I said it's not good either. But I know I would be insulted and angry if I said I gave Lola a wack or a smack on the butt and then someone accused me of beating her. Maybe I think of it differently than others do, but I don't think of it as beating. Perhaps using the same word as the OP did would keep it simple and less room for interpretation and hurt feelings.
