Sophie Update Since the mandatory 72 hour waiting period is now over, the rescue was able to go over the details about Sophie's medical condition with me. No one claimed her. She is in so much pain that she won't allow anyone to hold her & she tries to bite anyone who even tries to touch her. The ruptured tumor on her tummy is constantly leaking, the discharge has matted all of her hair on her belly, and she smells of dead tissue. The tumor is about 6 inches in length. The cancer has spread throughout her body, into her lymph nodes and lungs. According to the vet, she is inoperative.
As much as I want to help this little girl, I completely understand the medical professionals & the rescue's decision to put her down. Although I am thrilled that they actually called me before they made a final decision, I almost wish that they hadn't. I sort of wish that I would have been blown off instead of having to know that Sophie is suffering & can't be saved. It hurts me inside to know that she spent her final days in a cage in the back of a vet's office - in severe pain waiting for her person who never came.
I'm sure this type of thing happens all the time. Sophie has become a statistic, just another little number mixed up with all the other digits that represent the selfishness & ignorance of humans.
I truly applaud those of you in the rescue field who volunteer your time, effort & finances to help these innocent pups. I don't know how you do it. I'm just glad that someone does.
