We went through sort of the same situation. I felt Katie Scarlett, my Yorkie needed companionship. Even though I am a stay at home wife, I just thought she needed that canine buddy. I wanted to get another Yorkie, but my husband was adamantly against it. He just did not think we were ready. Well, I happened to be on PetFinder one day and found this beautiful Maltese. I wanted to adopt her so bad, but still my husband just was not for it. So I called my Mom. I knew she wanted a companion too, and she adopted Mollie. Now we live with my parents. They have the downstairs of the house and we have the upstairs. And let me tell you, Mollie and Katie Scarlett ADORE one another! They want to be together all the time! They play all the time and I really do believe they are both happier having each other. So now I am a strongly in favor of having 2 in the household, or more, for companionship with one another. In our case, 2 girls were perfect! If we didn't have 2 girls, I think we would have 2 boys.
