I travel long distances by myself all the time. I travel in a car 12 hours or more with no problems with my little one. I just leash her in the back seat passenger side so she can see me with her blankie and pillow and she is good to go. Fortunately for me, she will sleep the entire drive.
I also just leash and walk Brandi. I NEVER EVER leave Brandi alone in the car under any circumstances. And if I have to go potty, I take them with me unless I am traveling with someone else who can watch her.
It's a pain carrying her with me everywhere but it is better to be safe than sorry.
