I had to teach her how to use the steps and it took about a week before she was brave enough to do it on her own.

I think you are going to deal with barking a lot if the Shih Tzu is allowed to be loose while the Yorkie is confined. He is not going to be happy about that situation. Do you have another room you can confine him to when you are not able to watch him? Maybe a room where he can still see what is going on and know that you are in the house? Like a bathroom or the kitchen? He might be more content if he can at least see and hear you when he is confined and you are home. Some people use an x-pen so the pup is not so isolated when confined.
I also have a small chaise at the end of my bed for my shih tsu mix and she prefers it to the lower and easier on her joints, ottoman that I placed on the side of the bed. She's very sturdy and her joints are pristine even at this age (9 years old). I do hate when she simply jumps off the side without using either ottoman OR small chaise at end of bed. She simply jumps off the bed onto the little carpet next to my side of the bed, sometimes she just goes for the hard wood. KILLS ME!

I need him to love his crate. He is loving it, thankfully. He's becoming easier and easier to crate as time goes by. It's a learning curve, of course. He is being crate trained a few times a day, being placed inside for up to an hour at random times. He's doing very well due to this... PROBLEM SOLVED. Thank you for your advice! I really love this site...so very helpful <3
