I don't see it as abusive either. Maybe you could give him a special treat in his crate when you leave. Then he'll see your leaving as more positive. I give Stella a piece of cooked chicken or hotdog to chew on as we leave so she hardly notices. I'm sure he'll resume barking when he's done for a period of time but eventually he'll get used to it.
