We had a playpen set up for Liberty from day one. He's one of the tiny squirts so there is room for his pillow bed, dishes, and a section with pee pad just in case he can't wait until I get home. I was afraid from the stories about them scaling the sides and escaping, so we did some condition training where we reward with treat and mega praises (acting crazily excited) about him being patient until let out. So far, he's not tried to get out but the sides are high. We've not had to use the top. Adding his pillow bed in there before I leave seems to make it more "his". The playpen is a portable so is easy to store in the trunk for road trips. It really also helped with house breaking!
