If they didn't want the dog anymore why couldn't they have at least taken her to a shelter. I hate shelters but she would have been fed and potentially adopted!!! Maybe she was meant to find your hubby; if she wasn't in such a bad state he wouldn't have noticed her and taken her home. His long has she been with you ?
