At 6 months, he should be kind of getting it but by no means near 100% housebroken. You're pretty much on track, just keep at it. Don't slack. Dogs usually won't go pee/poop near where they eat or sleep. But the thing with small dogs is just across the living room is far away to them. If you don't give them too much room, they won't want to go in their area and give off more signs they need to relieve themselves. The tethering actually works really well, I forgot about that last night.
