I would Google microchipping and go to the various sites and read their FAQS section, Home page plus do a microchip search on this site and read. It is far from perfect but the chip gives one an extra chance of getting their lost baby back or in areas of dispute of ownership, such as you pick up your pup at the vet/groomer/pet hotel/airline after a flight and it's another Yorkie or something. I don't know of that latter actually happening but worry a bit about it.
