I prefer a longer leash, knowing that when it is not taut, it tends to get under the little dog's right leg, too, for some reason, if they dance around as Tibbe does! But since I let him sniff and walk ahead, roam to the end of it, etc., all he wants on part of our walk, I need a longer leash for that. I do have to help him get it front under his right front leg but that's okay! He's enjoying his walk and exploring, sniffing, etc. Then on the other part of the walk, I just wrap the leash around my right wrist to shorten it and Tibbe walks at my left foot at a good pace. So I'd agree that a longer leash is better for a dog you are going to let walk ahead and roam around on the walk.
