The general rule is if the nasal discharge is clear...it's all good. But, it can change very quickly to cloudy, cream, yellow, or green even overnight. That's when there's a definite problem.
When Peek A Boo was sick, I bought a stethoscope so I could listen to his lungs, and if they didn't sound right I could rush him back in to see the vet, instead of waiting for symptoms to become evident. Thermometer too. His temp went over 105 d. F. He started with clear nasal discharge, and my vet started him on an antibiotic as a preventative, but the next day the discharge was cloudy, and there was a ton of it. He stopped eating and just layed in his bed, till I stopped to check him and saw his tongue was purple/blue. His heartbeat was soooo slow, but when I began to pet him, his HR increased. We went to a local vet, where I was told he had a very poor prognosis. They changed his ABs and gave him AB injections and nebulized him, then sent him home! I never cried so much in my whole life. Then the next day, he started eating again... but had to stay on the ABs for 30 days. He pulled through.... but I'll never ignore cold symptoms again, or wait to get treatment. It came on so quickly, one day he was eating, the next he wasn't and couldn't get up. Scared me to death!
