It is great to be part of a family but, we all need some one on one time. I never said it was a good idea to keep dogs apart so they wouldn't grieve when one dies.
After years of training all kinds of dogs, We devloped a training method especialy for small dogs.
Most of you know, Now I only train puppies and small breed dogs (toy sized) . We never use collars on them as a training tool. I am sorry the trainer you had, was so out of touch with the newer methods. You did the right thing by choosing a gentle, patient, reward based style of teaching.
Here are some very good training books:
1000 Best Dog Training Secrets by Robyn Achey,
Dog Dilemmas by Gary R. Sampson DVM and
Dog Perfect by Sarah Hodgson
great, thank you for the list of books, I'm going to look into it!
