The disks are soft squishy things in between the vertebrae that cushion them. The vertebrae are individual bones with a hole in the center that houses the spinal cord (a group of nerves, looks kind of like a telephone cable) and runs from the top of the neck to the tail. Sometimes vertebrae are fused together during surgery to provide stability in the spine. Sometimes disks are removed in surgery when they cause a problem or become damaged. I don't know how big a problem this is, unless a disk or a nerve is being pinched in the process.
