Dawn is supposed to be a grease cutter. You may need to later him up again and get the Dawn right down to the skin. Just keep it out of his eyes.
When I used to show Himalayan cats they always got a bath in Dawn before the show. It made their fur so fluffy and it would stand right out from the body.
