We take Jaeger when we can, too. I'm a stay at home gal, so he's only gone when we run errands or some outings. He's crated in the front hallway with a water bottle and some chewies.
He's 9 months but not 100% potty trained, and he's a bit spiteful yet-he's deliberately torn stuff up or peed on the bed because so and so didnt come into the house after I was dropped off, so the crate it is for right now.
I've also been told that if firefighters find an animal during a search, they can take it outside, but they are NOT allowed to search for animals, and that scared animals usually hide during a fire and dont try to escape. Therefore, crating an animal allows it to be rescued in an emergency.
