No, a shunt is a shunt and MVD is MVD, a dog can have either or both. A shunt is a vein that all puppies have, that noramally disappears right before birth or shortly after. MVD/HMD is Hepatic Microvascular Dysplaysia:
MVD , basically the blood cannot flow correctly through the liver with MVD.
