keep them separated while your away. I had this trouble when I brought a new mini schnauzer puppy in to our home with an older one. They fought really REALLY bad for the first few weeks. It was so bad that I thought I'd have to get rid of the puppy.
We ( my family) decided to work at getting them to at least not fight each other. It took at least a month ( closer to 2) of having both in a room with all of us. We took turns playing with them...one on one, and together. It was worth the time. The older dog eventually took on a protective mommy role...cleaning the puppy's eyes, helping with potty training...ect. They loved each other so much after a few months. It was worth the time we took with them.
