I am very sorry for your tragic loss. It is possible for a dog to injure himself -- my Max ran head on into a wall when he was a puppy and moving too fast.
This won't bring your puppy back, but I would think twice about allowing your friend to watch another dog.
This doctor should be able to tell if the trauma was from an accident like running into a bookcase.
