There is a possibility that this new litter may not throw a shunt puppy. I say this based on Dr. Tobias research. However, if you are feeling nervous, uncomfortable and scared. Call Dr. Center and ask her advice on what her recommendations would be.

I completely agree with all above. ANY of us, God forbid, can throw a shunt from any of the best pedigrees out there....I so pray for the discovery of the genetic marker that will allow us to KNOW if the precurser is present in any breeding dog. It is WHAT a breeder does after you discover you have this propensity to produce shunts in a breeding pair, that separates the wheat from the shaft! I think you must assume the cost of the surgery, the diagnostics used to determine the diagnosis, and refund half the cost of the pup. That is what my heart tells me I personally would need to do to make this right. I do not know if you have other breeding stock. Pull the pedigrees on the pair that threw this shunt. I would go back at least 12 generations......study intently......mark everywhere breedings were tripleling up on any breeding....make note of WHO these dogs were, out of what line.....and DO NOT CROSS THESE STRONG LINE BREEDINGS AGAIN. That will help avoid this for you in the future...but it is only one part of the formula....but it is a start. I agree also about communication with either Dr.Tobias' group or Dr.Center.....I have never communicated with Dr.Center but she has obviously also be highly beneficial and productive to this research development.
