I skipped conditioner on the head for a long time after Max's troubles, but now I am getting braver and putting it on the boys' beards and mustaches a bit. We still don't put it on top of the head. Conditioner is definitely not tearless.
If I find the boys' topknots needs conditioning, I use Vellus Satin creme. It is a leave in product that dog exhibitors like. Wish I carried it in my store, but the company does almost all of their own online retailing.
