Some kind of a X pen would really be helpful to you. Make sure you don't leave him outside in the heat for more than a few minutes at a time. Check out the fence and make sure it is 100% escape proof. I would spend quite a bit of time with him in the condo before leaving him alone there or you could have a barking issue.
My dog does not like being in the dark but they all have their own preferences. Check the temperature of the sand because it can get very hot during the day. Do you have a purse like pet carrier that you can put him in so you can take him places with you?
