Get yourself a good flea comb. It will pick up any bugs that are on him. Check him out very closely to make sure his skin is totally bug free. A bath would not hurt but I don't like flea and tick shampoos either unless it is necessary. If you are able to get rid of any bugs by hand you are better off. When he comes in from outside just take your flea comb and run it through his fur to make sure he didn't pick up anything while he was out. Turn him over and check his belly.
I use Advantage II on Gracie even though we do have ticks in the woods and the fields. I don't take her in those areas. We mostly walk on pavement, sidewalks and trails. If we go a considerable distance or get near wilder areas I always check her out extra when we come in. I haven't had anything get on her yet this year thankfully.
