I didn't even know what a Yorkie standard weight / requirements were before I adopted Miles. All I knew is that I was going to adopt a beautiful, sweet dog. I think that under 7 lbs. (AKC would actually prefer 4-6 lbs.) standard is a little unrealistic INMO. Of course I am sure that the folks on here with the tiny little Yorkie will beg to differ. Someone on here once said that "IT should be spayed" referring to someone who wanted to breed their dog. I think it was a mixed breed, but still "IT"???

Yorkies were developed from medium sized dogs originally weighing 20-30 lbs. so those genes are still present in the dogs somewhere. Oh well, what to do. All of our teapots are beautiful regardless of AKC standards
The Yorkie is a beautiful dog at any size for sure. That poor darling girl in NYC is adorable. Her ears are down but she is obviously a Yorkie and I think they said she was 12lbs. Usually the Yorkies disappear as soon as they show up in those shelters but for some reason this poor darling has been there for several days. I had hoped a rescue would get her by now. I shouldn't torture myself about these things but it really bothers me.
Yes, people do get rid of them because of size. The tiny dog is a fashion statement these days and the puppy mill suppliers will say anything to sell those puppies. Lots of "over sized" Chihuahuas and Maltese and "designer" dogs go in those shelters, too.
