I don't even know what a Joey cut is!
I have been putting top knots in Lucy's hair regularly. I found that she's less likely to fuss about it if I make it a smaller top knot and don't pull it too tight. I also take it out every night. She has long eyelashes and I don't like to get them caught up in the knot either. I'll let the groomer do a better knot. For now, I'm just getting her used to me doing it (with my clumsy nubby fingers and all!)
I can't even put my daughter's hair in a high pony tail without fumbling!
