I have a male Maltese and I love him to pieces. He is one of the sweetest little dogs. He and my female Yorkie get along great.. I think the breeds are really compatible with each other. I love having one of each. Maltese are more work in the grooming department though. Even the best bred Maltese can get some tear staining and their coats tend to matt more but all the work is worth it because they are gorgeous.
