Maybe take the other dog from the room & cover top & 3 sides of his little crate to decrease his visuals & encourage the den/sleep response. Maybe if he will eat some, that on top of his pain medicine will then allow him to relax & let go. Decreasing his stimuli in the home with as little activity as possible helps. This is what I did with Tibbe - tented most of his crate. The rest of the time, I kept Tibbe in my lap & kept him quiet there. Wasn't hard. He was pretty loopy & after eating a few bites, he went to sleep.
