When I told my grandpa we got a puppy from a breeder, I explaineshave how theyto were akcso they showed andseveral how reputableto the line their my pup was from-this was years back, he shocked me when he said take it back thay breeder isn't worth their salt.
He told me in "his day" a reptable breeder didnt sell puppies they sold dogs usually arounds 6 months old they came house broken and knowing how to shake...I think he just meant they came trained. He said if I wanted a puppy to go to the pound and pick an accident out...
Funny how it's reversed now. |
I think breeding is done on a much larger scale now then back when your grampa is talking about. People who bred dogs back then were usually show people or people that had their special hunting/herding dog line. They knew that the true "pick of the litter" could not be determined until the puppies were much older. Now everybody thinks they can put any pure bred dogs together and get some puppies to sell.

When I was a kid there was a wealthy couple who bred/showed Boxers. One of their litters produced a puppy with an over slung jaw. It wasn't too bad but of course it could not be bred. They gave her to my dad. My mom was pretty shocked when he brought her home. She was a great dog. I loved her. She was my first pure bred and I have loved them ever since. But there is a huge difference in breeding methods between now and back then.
