I'd wait and see how he does... it won't hurt now for him to be a little more active, he may have to learn that he doesn't hurt as much too. Also, this far out from the surgery, he should be healed enough for very light activity. Coming off the pain meds will help you to be sure he's doing okay.

Did your vet write out discharge instructions for him? These will tell you what to expect after surgery and how soon to start giving him some freedom. If not, I'd call the vet to make sure.... they are responsible for his aftercare too.
