Another tip...Don't bid in even dollar amounts. If you want to give 10.00 as your max bid, make it something random, like 10.57. That way you don't put a max bid of 10.00 on it and lose it for 10.05.
I use odd amounts too in bidding but for a different reason. Some auctions go up in increments of .50 cents. If someone is trying to bid just above me at the last minute, this will sometimes force them to make another bid and they'll run out of time before that can be done.
