My son gives me this same attitude. He is always saying "they don't understand you" or "they are just DOGS". I ignore him.

However, luckily DH doesn't do that. He only said one thing. He said I had a problem with buying stuff for my dogs. I said "you are right. We could always have another baby". He decided to keep his mouth shut from that point on.
To answer your questions, yes I buy for my dogs more than myself. But I also buy for my kids more than myself. Yes, they get better health care than I do. But my argument there is that they are so tiny!! And yes, they get gifts for bdays and Christmas. And Valentines Day and any other day I can get by with!!
You love your babies and there is nothing wrong with that. I think my DH finally realized how much I love mine when my sister talked to him. She made it very clear to him "Well you KNOW how Rhonda is about her babies". She told him that one day there would be a major traffic jam on the highway and it would be me with a line of homeless animals following my car!

I think she made him see that I truly love animals.
I wish I had some advice on how to handle your DH. Hopefully he will come around!
