They have to be applied frequently to be effective. I used it last summer, but still had fleas after spending time in the country and ended up having to use capstar when we got back home. My Bella has the same reaction to fleas (itching and scratching) so I'm trying 1/2 tube Advantix II on each of my girls this year. Vets Best is a peppermint and clove oil based product and I still use it on my carpets and furniture... It is worth a try if you prefer the natural route
