We had a yorkie when the kids were young. He was a great dog but did not get the attention my dogs do now. With children your life is so busy. Seems like your running all the time. Boji was left alone each day as we went to work and school. Dh was able to get home and let him out during the day. He was a big part of the family. I had days feeling very bad for him. Thinking what kind of life is this for him. He did go on a few family vacations with us. Which we have great memories of. I do believe in my heart he had a good life and better then a lot of dogs. When we lost him at the age of 13 my dd said we lost our brother. Now that the kids are grown and I now have 3 inside dogs that are so spoiled. I am always worried about them and feel awful when they have to stay home alone more then an hour. I think you love your little one and feel the guilty of a busy family.
