I have only done this - ie hand fed their breakie/dinner, if the dog has shown food aggression. Oh and also on show weekends :-)

But yes you do measure out their daily allotment of food - and then it is very simple, you give an obedience command, and the first one my trainer teaches us to teach, is "focus command" - this is when the dog looks at you and then you immediately reward. Next sit, and come.

But I do always have the dogs do an obedience command prior to releasing them to have their dinner/breakie.
