I am sorry for your recent loss... I know how hard it is to loose a loved one ((hugs)) to you!
I think in general no matter the breed you have to be careful when mixing a large breed with a small breed! I am sure you know how to handle a large breed with a small breed since you have a Chow/Lab mix and also had a Pitt.
Maybe you should research some breeds and see what you like in the personalities? I have always loved Boxers- My brother has a boxer Leo, he gets a long great with Peanut!!
