what you do need is
enough money to take care of them in an emergency. I might be off here, but we like to have at least 1000.00 set aside for an emergency situation. We have pet insurance, about 30 bucks per month per dog( petplan). I dont want to discourage someone from getting a dog, but you really have to plan just as you would for a child. We dont have a great deal of money and we have two yorkies, but we are sure that in the event of an emergency they will be well taken care of. The small sacrifices are worth it to us. It all depends on where your priorities lie at the time. something to think about.
Lots of money is not required...but enough to take care of your hairy children is.
Love, food and water are the most important stuff. Just make sure you plan ahead for the unforeseen. Thats what parents do.
We love our boys, and they come first. If they could make it on their own, we might do things differently, but we know they cannot. After all, it was our choice to take them in, so its our responsibility to take care of them. We enjoy every moment!
They take care of us most of the time...
